Just presented this paper in a conference about professionalism and how I see it. So far professionals focus too much on methodologies and following or inventing standards, making systems more efficient. What I suggest is to reflect on what we do, how we do it and why we want to do it. Beluieving in what we thinki is right, and using our knowlede for what we think is right matters more than knowing a lot of stuff, or being very competent in delivering systems.

I like methodologies but only as background (theoretical or practical) knowledge, not as compulsory guidelines at work. I think we should lear about methodologies and when to use them, but never constrain ourselves to them. I read this somewhere on the web:
"Methodologies are a good place to start but no place to stop."
I really belive this. As time passes and we gain experience we develope common sense and familiarity with the practices that work. I am very fond of free will at work. We should be able to use what works and throw away what doesn't in a particular situation.
